Wine and Popular Diets – The Zone Diet

The Zone  Diet , created by Dr. Barry Sears, is based on the consumption of correct ratios of food groups. The main idea is that when you regulate your insulin levels, your body’s metabolism performs at its optimum level and you lose weight. You may remember that this  diet  was  popular  in the 1990s. Some people know that the Zone  Diet  is a celebrity  diet . I am not going to name names but some very famous people are rumored to follow this  diet . As always, don’t start this  diet  without consulting your doctor even if Brad and Jenn swear by it.

In spite of what you may read or see on TV, our bodies are not designed to process junk food well. Our ancestors ate lean protein and natural carbohydrates, and that’s what our bodies continue to expect. The Zone  Diet  sticks to the proper ratio, namely 40% Carbs, 30% Fat, and 30% Protein. These levels help the body to regulate insulin. When insulin is at the right level your body’s metabolism speeds up, and you lose weight.

One drawback of the Zone  Diet  is the need to measure your food intake quite precisely. The food groups are broken into ‘blocks’ subdivided into ‘mini-blocks’. A typical meal might involve one block of Carbohydrates, composed of three mini-blocks such as 1 cup of green beans, 2 cups of yellow squash, and 1 glass of red wine. As with many  diets , you should buy a specialized cookbook. Let’s talk about the pros and cons of this  diet .

Positive aspects of the Zone  Diet  include: Dieters eat fruits and vegetables and consequently don’t miss needed nutrients. Smaller portion sizes help build a healthier lifestyle and maintain weight loss. Your cravings for carbs disappear or at least lessen after a few days as your body adjusts to a high protein  diet . This  diet  is heart-healthy given its focus on lean proteins and “good cholesterol.” The Zone  Diet  may provide rapid weight loss in a short period of time.

Before you get carried away, let’s not forget the cons. As with many  diets , once you stop you may rapidly regain the pounds you shed if you return to your previous eating habits. The  diet  can be quite expensive; you will have to buy cookbooks and other materials. The recipes are often complicated and time-consuming. The Zone  Diet  usually doesn’t provide many restaurant options. On the other hand, Dr. Sears will be present at a Caribbean cruise which promises to offer gourmet cuisine.

What about wine in this  diet ? In general, wine is allowed. But a four-ounce glass of wine is considered a block of carbohydrates. If you drink a glass of wine with dinner, you will have to forego some other source of carbs. Now you might look for one of those low-carb wines.

Problems With Popular Diets

These days it seems like our entire culture is obsessed with personal appearance. Women want to be skinnier; men want to build up giant muscles. No matter where you look, there’s bound to be a book, DVD, television program or website that’s claiming to have the newest and most advanced  diet  plan that’s sure to make all your weight loss dreams come true. However, any personal trainer worth his salt will tell you that these  diets  are almost all fads and marketing ploys, very few will actually result in sustained weight loss, and some can even be harmful to both your physical and emotional health.

First of all, many people who desire moderate to significant weight loss think that they can make the decision to try a  diet , start it the next day and start watching the weight melt off. Unfortunately, like many things in life, eating is a habit that we form from a very young age. Just like biting your nails or forgetting to turn off the lights when you leave a room, bad eating habits need to be consciously worked on in order to change them in the long term. Moreover, it will take a lot of work and effort to maintain a restrictive  diet  that you’re not used to, especially if it is depriving you of foods you like and need.

Another thing that sabotages the weight loss plans of many people when they start a new  diet  is that they are simply bored with the foods that the  diet  permits them to eat. This may lead to episodes of staring longingly at a piece of bread, or having dreams about steak when all you can eat are steamed veggies. The truth of the matter is that the body needs a wide variety of foods in order to remain physically and mentally satisfied, the trick is that some of these foods can only be eaten in moderation.

The most important thing to remember about fad  diets  that restrict what you can eat is that sometimes they are actually robbing you and your body of valuable nutrients and vitamins that are usually obtained by the eating of certain foods. If you cut out carbohydrates completely from your  diet , you’re likely to find that you are low on energy, and constantly feel tired. If you cut out all meats and proteins, you may find that you feel weak and may become anemic. The key is having a balanced  diet  plan.

Popular Diets – The Diet Food List Model

Diet food lists have been around for quite some time. Dieting is difficult because most people do not know what is healthy. They need some guidance as to what foods are beneficial for their body and what foods should be limited or outright avoided. That is why so many people steer toward diets that provide a very detailed list of diet foods.

Let’s take a quick look at just three of the popular modern diets which take advantage of the food list model.

The South Beach Diet

While there is no one standard list of diet foods for this plan, there are approved foods which are kept on a list which is updated on a regular basis. There are different food lists for each phase of the plan, with the phase one list being the most restrictive. This initial phase is designed to detox the body of sugar and other unhealthy substances and give the follower a jump start toward their weight loss goals.

The diet list that goes with phase two of the plan is more lenient and is filled in largely by the follower themselves. They are able to add back in complex carbohydrates, doing it one at a time to determine how the body reacts to each addition. In this manner, an individualized diet list is created as they determine what gives them energy and what zaps their energy. Energy-inducing foods that make them feel good go on the approved list while the others are taken away.

The Atkins Diet

While there has been tons of criticism and debate over the Atkins Diet, it is another low carb plan that operates off of a diet food list. While there is an Induction stage that is very strict just like the South Beach Diet, the lists of food for the entire Atkins plan are stricter with carbohydrates.

This plan has worked for many people, but for others it has been heavily criticized. This may be because the types of foods offered on the approved food list tend to satisfy those who enjoy eating heavier meals with fatty meats and other sources of high protein foods. Unfortunately, that way of eating is not in line with many people’s taste buds.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

There are quite a few internet based diets, but this is one of the best. The plan makes use of a huge diet food list which is available online for plan participants, but it also provides a very unique menu generator that automatically creates meals and snacks from the approved diet food list. This makes it fast and easy to stick to the approved foods.

The addition of the menu generator takes the Fat Loss 4 Idiots plan to a new level. It makes dieting easier and increases the chances that more people will stick to the approved diet food list for a longer period of time.

The foods approved on this diet are extremely healthy and they are combined in ways that are satisfying and delicious, according to the follower’s own taste buds. There are even ways to develop special diet menus with the generator, such as vegetarian meals.

There certainly are other diets out there that make use of the food list model to some extent, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Look into them and find something that works for you!

3 Popular Diets in Hollywood

Celebrities use different weight loss approaches, from eating five times a day to allowing treats regularly to keep you motivated to eat right the rest of the time. These three  popular   diets  from Hollywood are less strict than low carb  diets .

The first  diet  is called the 90/10  diet . The basic idea of this  diet  is to eat a healthy  diet  90% of the time and enjoy “fun food” 10% of the time. The challenging part of this  diet  is working your fun foods into your daily calorie allotment. For example, if you are on the 1,600 calorie plan, 260 calories from a cookie leaves you with 1,340 calories to utilize for the rest of the day. During this program you have to become accustomed to monitoring your food or calorie intake.

The second  popular   diet  is called the Best Life  Diet . The author of this  diet  has created this in book format however to get full content you will need to pay a membership fee on a monthly basis. The book relies on you making permanent lifestyle changes. If you continue to follow the principals you will lose weight; but if you stop following the plan you will gain your weight back and possibly gain more weight than before.

The last  diet  featured here is called the Five Factor  diet . Some celebrities well known have followed this  diet  too. The idea behind this  diet  is to eat five meals each day. The downside of this  diet  is it requires you to spend a lot of money buying groceries. Five meals per day can add up to a hefty bill. the plan is for five weeks only and that is if you expect to lose only 10 pounds. To lose more weight will require you to continue this program which can be pretty expensive. There are better programs available.

Three  Popular   Diets  To Consider

  1. Atkins  Diet  Plan – well known low carb/high protein  diet  back in the 70’s.

  2. Jenny Craig  Diet  Plan – Jenny’s delicious cuisine offers satisfying, nutritious and convenient meals and snacks that take the guesswork out of caloric intake. Still a well advertised and widely used plan in this year 2009.

  3. Fat Flush  Diet  Plan – stimulates lymph flow to flush out toxins and cellulite fast! This  diet  will reduce tummy fat and fatty deposits. One of the more cleansing type of  diets  that focuses on cleaning the body thus reducing weight.

Is it a medical condition, a emotional response or a habit. Get to the root cause of your weight gain and maybe a simple readjustment in  diet  will do the trick.
